Introduction
============

The Department of Aeronautics manages a Linux environment to support
computational teaching and research. This service is distinct from the desktop
environment provided by the University 
`Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)`_ department, or 
the service provided by the `Research Computing Service (RCS)`_.

A range of software packages and libraries are available on the Linux
Environment. Some are provided as system-wide packages, while others 
are provided through modules which can be loaded through a terminal.

However, some applications are available directly from the applications
menu in the Linux Desktop Environment.
